A new monogram for G&S Vastgoed

3 May, 2023  |   1 comment

At the end of 2022, Retype got a call from the brand consultancy The Stone Twins, with whom we had successfully collaborated in the past. Declan and Garech had exciting news: they had been tapped to revamp the corporate image of G&S Vastgoed, one of the leading real estate developers in the Netherlands.

Central to the brand refresh was the design of a new monogram based on classical and humanist letterforms—which is where Retype came in. Said monogram should have uni … > Read article

The old window of Café “Het Molenpad”

14 July, 2015  |   No comments

The beautiful lettering painted on the windows of Café “Het Molenpad” was one of the first works with “Amsterdamse Krulletters” I could identify and photograph back in 2004. “Het Molenpad” is on the Prinsengracht, separated a few meters from the location of the building were the Public Library used to be located. Two or three years later, I started to be more systematic and take pictures of every window with krulletters, so I came back to this … > Read article

De Amsterdamse Krulletter book

11 April, 2015  |   1 comment

What are the origins of the exuberant swash letters that can be found on the windows of many of Amsterdam’s most traditional bars? Who painted them? Was it a collective creation, or the work of a lone gifted sign painter? How old is this style?
For almost a decade Ramiro Espinoza thoroughly researched the refined, swirling lettering style, examining every surviving example in Amsterdam, Maastricht and Ghent in an effort to answer these questions. He compiled his findings in De A> Read article

Introducing ‘Dulcinea’: An exploration of baroque calligraphy

12 August, 2012  |   No comments

Dulcinea is the title of Ramiro Espinoza’s in-depth look at Spanish Baroque calligraphy’s most extreme tendencies, and especially at some of those produced by the writing masters Pedro Díaz Morante and Juan Claudio Aznar de Polanco. These 17th and 18th centuries alphabets with their plentiful calligraphic flourishes represented a marked break with the harmonic and angular Renaissance Cancellaresca style.
It was Morante who first introduced and popularized the use of the poin … > Read article

New font release: ‘Krul’

6 May, 2012  |   No comments

Krul is a typographic interpretation of the lettering style created by Dutch letter painter Jan Willem Joseph Visser at the end of the 1940s, which decorated the traditional brown bars of Amsterdam. In the beginning, these letters were strongly associated with the pubs connected to the Amstel brewery, given that Visser was the company’s official painter. As the years passed, the style became increasingly popular, and various business owners in Amsterdam and other Dutc … > Read article

Letters and bars

24 July, 2007  |   No comments

I confess I like bars. If they are old and peopled by old men, all the better. Me, I imagine hell as inhabited by beautiful people sipping coloured drinks at a trendy pub.
This affection led me to start looking at the pretty letters naming many of the most traditional bars in Amsterdam. They were certainly original and had been painted by the same hand for sure.
Some details were extremely original. It was a type of letter related to the formal English documents written with point … > Read article

Haciendo verdadera tinta de manuscritos

18 November, 2006  |   39 comments

> Read article
